One of the main safety concerns when hiking in the Cape is the
unpredictable weather. It can range from snow to heat and fire so its very important to
check the forecast carefully and consult the local site office for advice. Each year there are fatalities on our mountains, usually in some way weather related. Cold fronts can set in quickly making visibility poor and rocks slippery.
Fire in Fynbos
Be aware that fynbos is fire-prone and in hot weather and with our infamous south-easter - fires spread incredibly rapidly. If you are hiking in dry, hot and windy weather keep your eyes open for smoke on the horizon and if you smell fire, phone the local authorities immediately to check where it is coming from and to inform them of your location.
