Table Mountain Waterfalls

Waterfall near Devils Peak

The Symphony of Water

Every Cape Townian should do this winter hike. Its really short, really beautiful and really easy to access.

All you need to do is wait for a sunny winter's morning after some good rain. Then pack some muffins and a thermos, drive up to Tafelberg Road, park at Platteklip Gorge and set your sites to just before the zigzags. When you get to a junction about a third of the way up (there is a sign board there), hang a left towards devils peak and follow that path. It will take you straight to a beautiful waterfall and just after it is the perfect spot to sit and have your breakfast and watch the rest of Cape Town wake up.

You can come back down the same way or continue in the direction of Devils Peak then take a left and down when you get to the fork. This path spits you out on Tafelberg Road again. You could do the whole thing and eat your breakfast fairly comfortably in just over an hour.

Another nice route in winter is the contour path from Kloof Corner to Platteklip. At some point a waterfall will cascade over a rock overhang so that you will be walking behind the water. It's really something special, but wait until there's been some good winter rain already. This is one of my favourite trail running routes because its safe, easy to access, has drinkable water, a nice flat section and you can get back to your car within an hour. (...More about trail running routes in another post.)
