Table Mountain Classic

Lions Head from Table Mountain
We did a quick hike up Table Mountain from Platteklip Gorge and down via India Venster, ending underneath the Cable Car to show Austrian cousin Sash and girlfriend Julz the sites of our beautiful mountain.

This is a classic route up with a very easy, clear path to follow. Its always busy, there is a security hut at the bottom, plenty of parking and always crystal clear streams to drink from.

It is however pretty steep so the cable car is a good option for the decent unless you're a regular walker. If you go at a good pace you can make it up in 45 minutes. Give yourself about an hour to mooch around the top (or longer for a cup of tea at the restaurant) and 2 hours to come down India Venster if you're up for a little bit of rock climbing. Its really not that difficult but if you're the nervous sort then rather go back down Platteklip again. India Venster requires a bit of knowledge about following mountain paths and you need to keep your wits about you - you can quite easily take a wrong path and end up on a ledge. This is one of the routes where there are quite often accidents, but if you're observant and careful to follow the yellow foot markings you should manage just fine. (I was about 6 months pregnant here so don't let me put you off - just be careful down India Venster! The rest is straight forward.)

Its almost always cold on top, so no matter what the weather is doing down on Tafelberg Road, don't leave your windbreaker in the car.
