Checklist

Here is my packing checklist for overnight hiking:

- hat, glasses, sunscreen, lip-ice
- waterbottle, game sachets
- mini medical kit*
- maps & small pencil, permit, fully charged cellphone & camera, emergency numbers
- sleeping bag, mat, blow-up pillow
- snacks
- meals (ziploc in amounts that you will need to avoid carrying extra weight)
- tea/coffee (and long-life 125ml cartons or powdered milk)
- pocket knife
- stove, gas, matches in a waterproof container/ziploc, pots
- light waterproof jacket and/or fleece, beanie
- sock inners (wear 2 pairs - 1 thick, 1 thin and change the thins)
- boots (polished with dubbin to help with waterproofing)
- clothes, underware, costume
- slops/crocs are a luxury for the evening
- facecloth/chamois
- loo paper and small spade
- black bag (to waterproof your pack) and 2 shopping packets
(I put the packets between my socks and boots for extra waterproofing if it gets wet and rainy... nothing ruins a hike like blisters and you want to look after your feet!)

*Your hiking medical kit should contain at least the following:

- space blanket
- panado/disprin and something stronger like myprodol
- anti-inflams
- anti-histamine
- valoid
- rehydrate sachets
- blister plasters
- bandage
- personal emergency info
